Episode 48: Opening

Adventurers Tournament Overview.

The main point of holding this tournament is for the people of Niberg to reaffirm the power and skill of the adventurers.

Since regular people rarely get a glimpse of the brave figures of adventurers, it’s important to imprint it in the people’s minds from time to time, to remind them that these adventurers are the ones hard at work to preserve their peaceful lives.

That their current peaceful life wouldn’t exist without the presence of the adventurers.

That the country, the world, needs adventurers.

Adventurers.

I ask you all to show us the magic and skills you have refined all these years.

The battle for pride and soul will lead our hearts to a new frontier.

I pray from the bottom of my heart for you all to show us a good fight. That is all for my sincere greeting.

18th King of Nibelugh, Adeed-Stratos-Nibelugh

Adventurers’ Tournament Rules

The qualifying will be held in a battle royal format in which one representative of the party is selected and the participating teams are divided into 4 blocks.

For each block, the top two teams will be given the right to participate in the final tournament, and the match format of the final tournament will be announced after the qualifying.

Below are the rules that will be applied throughout the tournament:

  1. Leaving the venue is prohibited. Infringement will cause immediate disqualification.
  1. Usage of recovery items is prohibited. Infringement will cause immediate disqualification.
  1. If it is judged that the participant is hurting other participants more than necessary, he/she will be disqualified immediately.
  1. Killing is prohibited. Infringement will cause immediate disqualification.
  1. Anyone who commits an inhumane act shall be permanently deprived of his/her adventurer qualifications.

That is all.

=====

[Fuーhn… This screams huge advertisement for adventurers.]

[Well, the country benefits greatly from the existence of strong adventurers. In return, the country will also take good care of those strong adventurers.]

[True… the rules themselves are pretty straightforward. It prevents the competitor from cheating.]

[Yes. We have to win by our strength. Healing magic is allowed, but using healing items is prohibited. Is it because there was someone who abused that in the past?]

[Maybe. But that also means I can’t use Asclepius for her healing. Also Excalibur and Solomon.]

[Well, please leave the qualifying round to me. Rhode-sama need not exert your power just yet.]

[Eh, Levi wants to participate in the qualification?]

[I rarely had my turn to shine recently. So please allow me this one time… or… I should not?]

[I, I get it already. You don’t have to give me that kind of look…]

Saying all that while looking down with moist eyes. That’s cheating…

There’s no way I could reject her request this way.

[Fufu… I won.]

[So foxy…]

When we talk about that, a big door other than the one we entered opens and a man appears from inside.

The noisy waiting room immediately calmed down as everyone turned to this man.

[Thank you very much for your patience! The opening ceremony will start soon, so we will guide you to the venue from now on! Please do not forget that everyone here will be in block A! Also, the blocks were decided at random. Please note that we cannot accept any objections to how the teams are divided! Alright then, please proceed after me!]

Everyone walked toward the dark passage following that man.

The brightness of the sunlight coming from the roofless arena was visible from the semi-circular exit at the end of the passage.

Even from where I am, I could already hear the noises and cheers from the gathering crowds.

The moment I passed through the exit, the atmosphere was enough to make me tremble.

Even with such a large space, the arena was filled to the brim with spectators.

Their excitement seemingly reached a climax when we, the adventurers marched out to the arena from the four entrances.

All of their voices combined were so thunderous, I swore it nearly tore my eardrum and rattled my brain.

[I’m getting nervous…]

[I have never seen so many people in one place outside of the battlefield before… how many tens of thousand spectators are there?]

The spectator seats piled up so high that I couldn’t even tell how many steps there were. They’re there no matter where you turned 360 degrees… and each one was occupied.

When I thought that I’m going to fight in front of this many people, my body trembled on its own.

It’s not fear per se… was it excitement? Anyway, this is the first time I’ve ever felt this way.

There was a large square stone stage in the middle of the arena, where all contestants started to converge.

I and Levi followed suit. And when the last adventurer finally reached the stage, as if on cue, the cheering became even louder than before.

『Adventurers! I thank you all for participating in this tournament! My name is Delphi! While I may have my shortcomings, I shall try my best to host the opening ceremony! Thank you!』

When the mans’ voice, enhanced by magic stone, echoed throughout the arena, the spectators’ cheering and applause exploded once more.

Delphi… I’m pretty sure that he’s Nibelugh Kingdom chancellor. I’ve heard his name before.

『Firstly, a total of 72 teams-over 300 adventurers are participating in the tournament! And most of them are B rank or higher, a level that is rarely seen in recent years! All 100,000 spectators here can feel free to expect heated battles! His Majesty the King himself is also spectating the tournament from Nibelugh Palace! Therefore, I want all competitors to show their best! And with that… I declare the adventurers’ tournament is now open!!』

100,000 people spectating… that’s ridiculous…

When the Chancellor’s speech was over, a roaring cheer wrapped up the venue again.

This is the end of the opening ceremony.

[So what’s next after this…]

『Everyone!?Are you feeling excited alreadyyyyy!?』

[ [ [ [ [ UOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! ! ! ] ] ] ] ]

[W-what the!?]

Not only the audience but also the participants raised their fists to the sky, showing even more excitement than ever.

What’s with this enthusiasm…!?

『Ooookaaaaaaaaay! That is all from His Highness, the Chancellor now! The actual event will be hosted by me! Carol at your service! Nice to me you…!』

[ [ [ [ [ UOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! ! ! ] ] ] ] ]

This woman is quite popular among the masses.

She’s certainly cute… but I feel like… there’s something beyond that.

『And…! The commentator that everyone always waits for every year! Nibelugh’s most prized SSS rank adventurer… give a round of applause to Ban-sama!』

[ [ [ [ [ UOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOO ! ! ! ] ] ] ] ]

[T-that guy!]

[I see. So that was the case.]

A huge image was projected on the two glass walls installed in the arena with the power of magic stones. And the image belonged to that person who helped us a while ago.

That silver hair, dark skin, sharp golden eyes, and the black armor-clad body of his gave off a sense of intimidation even if it’s just a reflection.

Two sword handles could be seen behind his back. It’s covered by his thick cape, but I could tell that those are two fairly enormous greatswords.

[If it’s an SSS ranked adventurer… there’s indeed someone called Ban if I recall correctly. What was it again… “Godslayer Ban” or something along that line?]

[“Godslayer”… He certainly has the power to back up that title. This SSS rank adventurer… he is a monster.]

[Did you take a ‘look’ at him?]

[Yes, I shall tell Rhode-sama the details later. Simply speaking, his power is very close to god-level.]

[Really? No way… I mean, is he that strong? Comparable to Crown-san?]

[Well, there is always a possibility… but we would not know unless we see him in action.]

Ban-san was standing quietly with his arms crossed. The spectators, seemingly seeing something in him, somehow began to quiet down. The arena was soon wrapped in silence.

Amazing… to silence 100,000 spectators without actually saying anything yet…

『Thank you, everyone. Let me introduce myself once more. I’m Ban and it’s good to be here again. 』

I don’t know why, but I got goosebumps just from hearing that.

How should I put it…

Is this… what they call a real hero?

The so-called voice that could make our soul tremble just with few words?

I was completely entranced by his voice.

『Well, it’s because everyone’s here that I came back to this hometown of mine this year as well. Indeed, the present world would not be possible without adventurers. But conversely, we can maintain our raison d’etre because we have someone to fight for. The world cannot be established if either one is missing. Various vocations keep the world going and it is us adventurers who are responsible to protect this circle. And more than 300 people who have gathered here can be said to be important players who will protect the future of Niberg… So much for the serious story, let me give you my personal opinion. Actually, for the past few years, I’ve been called every year to watch the tournament, but it was a bore. Well, don’t get me wrong, it’s not that the level is low. Those who are said to be reasonably strong won. It’s fun and all, but it’s been a while since I felt the thrill of watching the rise of a super rookie. There are some strong guys among the participants this year as well, and it seems that they are said to be the best candidates to be a champion… but let me say this. The rookies still have a chance to win this tournament. Make this tournament a joy to watch for once, alright? Well then, let the festival begin!』

[ [ [ [ [ UOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ! ! ! ! ! ] ] ] ] ]

[Fufu, Rhode-sama… You have such a huge smile on your face]

[Ah, well, as Ban-san said… It’s going to be fun.]

And thus, the opening ceremony was finally truly over.
